About Andy
Andy Turnbull is an established Northumbrian guitarist performing and teaching around the country, whose influences rang from the bottleneck blues/gospel players of early 1930s America to the modern-day virtuosos of Andalusian flamenco. Andy began teaching himself on an old telecaster guitar when he was eight years old; learning by playing along to library tapes and dad’s old records, picking up extra tips from anyone willing to impart. Since the very beginning he has never stuck to any particular style and has always aimed at perfecting it before outgrowing it. However, he concedes, he is currently “stuck to (or with) flamenco” after a six month stint in Jerez de la Frontera, Andalucía during 2007 “trying to learn it, properly”.He has worked with a number of bands over the years - most notably, the now obsolete, BALAO – and is currently part of delta blues duo MONKEY JUNK. Andy also gives flamenco recitals under the stage name of El Niño del Toon (a name given to him by Maestro Jose Luis Balao). He has done studio session work for many producers in the North-East of England; although he does not know which tracks he played on or even if they made it to the mastering sessions. Regardless, he has played on multiple Hip-Hop, Folk, Blues, Bossanova, House, Trance and Dub-Step recordings. He has supported many international artists such as Vetiver, Little Wings (Kyle Field), Wild Birds and Peace Drums, Jana Hunter, Phosphorescent, Beth Jeans Houghton and the Hooves of Destiny, Lone Pigeon, Joe Gideon and the Shark, to name but a few.

Andy has been teaching, off-and-on, for over eleven years and is now (2012) available to take on more students. Whether young or old, absolute beginner or professional, Andy has in-depth knowledge of many different styles of guitar playing and technique; in particular flamenco and bottleneck slide.
